FEBS organized the Spetses Course where early career scientists explored functional genomics and its impact on major metabolic diseases

From August 29th to September 3rd 2025, FEBS hosted the Advanced Lecture Course on Functional Genomics of Metabolic Diseases on the island of Spetses, in Greece. The course gathered PhD students, postdocs, and early career scientists to explore new insights into human disease mechanisms and genomics-based strategies for discovery and intervention towards personalized medicine.

Discussions focused on functional genomics – the integrated study of how genes and non-coding regions of the genome shape phenotypes. With rapid progress in multi-omics and genome editing, these approaches are increasingly relevant for tackling major metabolic diseases such as obesity and metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cardiovascular and liver diseases.

The program stood out for its interactive format: hands-on workshops, guided discussions, poster sessions, and all enriched by a unique networking experience immersed in Greek culture on Spetses Island.
